Throughout the Spring Term, Bassetts Farm Primary School took full advantage of expert coaching provided by Mr Gary Moyle, who regularly coaches youth at Withycombe Rugby Club.

Boys and girls from years 3, 4, 5 and 6 participated in weekly training sessions which taught children the basics of the game through fun and engaging games. Mr Moyle was assisted by Devon rugby star, Sam Fulthorpe, who helped inspire children to develop a passion for the game.

On the 17th March, ten children from Years 5 and 6 used their newly learnt skills in their first competitive tag-rugby tournament, which was against schools from across Exmouth. Incredibly, after only five training sessions, the Bassetts youngsters managed to win four of their six matches. However, they just missed out on a place in the semi-finals, as they lost their last match to a strong Brixington side. This being said, the children remained upbeat and were happy with the way they played as a team throughout the tournament.

It is without that Mr Moyle’s passion for the game has rubbed off on the children and will inspire them to continue rugby outside of school.
